About
Life
I was born and raised in Delaware and ended up in Georgia the way a lot of people end up places: my wife is from here. We live in a quiet neighborhood in the rural stretch between a few small towns — close to a grocery store, half an hour from a Walmart. People who aren't from here think Georgia is Atlanta. It isn't; there's a lot more to see. October is the best month, and when I need to think I drive the mountain roads in North Georgia. A normal Saturday is some work, some play, and mostly time with family.
Since 2023 I've volunteered with my local county emergency management agency on its communications and disaster assessment team. I'm a licensed amateur radio operator, so during exercises and real events I help keep communications up when everything else is down, and afterwards help assess the damage. Georgia's AUXCOMM certification and the FEMA incident command courses came out of that. I'm currently working toward the PMP, because I keep ending up responsible for schedules and budgets and would like to be good at it on purpose.
Work
I've worked from home since 2019 and I like making things, mostly software. I'm an engineer who ended up running engineering: CTO at three companies — a warehouse management software firm, a platform for Army JROTC programs used by 250,000-plus cadets, and now Future Force, where I built the Cadence JROTC platform from an empty repository to a live pilot in 34 working days. In every one of those jobs I was also the person writing most of the code, and I intend to keep it that way.
I write a lot of code outside work too — about three thousand commits since 2022, a good share on side projects that exist because I wanted them to. I like small, sharp tools over big frameworks and finishing things over starting them. This site is hand-written HTML and CSS with no trackers. The full work history is on the résumé, and the best way to reach me is jacob@janorser.com.
